Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga will soon appear on movie screens, in a new version of the movie “A Star Is Born”. While waiting for the new film, Lady Gaga recently gave an interview on her fight against fibromyalgia. This chronic syndrome can cause excruciating pain in the nerves and joints.
The “pain” of fibromyalgia
For millions of people suffering from fibromyalgia, everyday life is a constant struggle. One of the worst things about this condition is that many people do not even recognize it as a “real” disease. Some doctors even doubt the honesty of their patients when they tell them about their symptoms. From doctors to the general public, many people do not believe that this dreaded syndrome really exists, let alone that it can be considered a disease. Because the pain is hidden in your body, others can not see it as easily as they would see a broken arm.
Lady Gaga is one of the few celebrities to talk about this disease. In the interview, she explained the link that exists between the disease and various disorders such as: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and other trauma. While researchers have not yet discovered the causes of fibromyalgia, they have managed to make the connection between this syndrome and the traumatic events that can occur in the life of an individual. In the case of Lady Gaga, it seems that the disease was triggered during her adolescence. Over time, her fibromyalgia got worse because of the stress of her musical career.
Living with fibromyalgia
For Lady Gaga, anxiety, stress and depression related to her fibromyalgia send her nervous system overdrive (overload). This ends up causing pain in the nerves and joints. The International Association for the Study of Pain has also found that PTSD is a major risk factor for the development of fibromyalgia.
For many years, doctors have thought that fibromyalgia (sometimes called “all-over” and “all-out” illness) was just the brainchild of patients. Recently, they began to realize that this disease is real. Although patients are relieved that doctors finally believe them, there is no risk of finding a cure for this disease anytime soon.
Lady Gaga’s fibromyalgia was difficult to bear because she had the impression that no one believed her. She finally decided to talk about her illness and her history of PTSD. Unfortunately, there are still many people who do not believe that she is actually suffering from fibromyalgia.
Long before these revelations, the singer (very popular!) Had already had to cancel many of his concerts because of the pain. She had also canceled shows due to a hip injury. After the cancellation of another series of concerts, Lady Gaga finally decided to reveal her mental and physical health problems. His article on his Instagram page detailed his fight against chronic diseases.
The case of Lady Gaga shows the real fight that people with fibromyalgia must lead. Some of the singer’s fans accused her of being dramatic, playing the victim, and simply trying to find excuses to cancel her shows. Unfortunately, many people with fibromyalgia also faced the same kind of skepticism. When you have an ‘invisible’ disease that is very difficult to diagnose, people think that you are inventing your symptoms.
Currently, doctors do not know for sure what causes fibromyalgia. They also have not found a cure for this chronic disease. The only medications currently prescribed for fibromyalgia are antidepressants and analgesics. These can, of course, temporarily relieve the symptoms, but they do not cure them.
